5 Steps To Becoming Comfortable Feeling Uncomfortable

Our thoughts create our feelings. It’s not our circumstances that create our feelings – it’s our thoughts about our circumstances. 

So if we’re feeling uncomfortable, we have a few choices.
  1. We can change our circumstances … sometimes. However, most of our circumstances are really out of our control. If we feel uncomfortable because we’re in an environment where we think something that makes us feel uncomfortable, we may choose to remove ourselves from that environment. But what if that’s not possible, practical or it just isn’t the best decision?
  2. We can change our thinking. Since our thinking causes our feelings and uncomfortable is a feeling, we can choose to believe something that doesn’t make us feel uncomfortable.
  3. We can choose to just feel uncomfortable…. Until we don’t feel uncomfortable any more.
How do we do this?

Step 1: Recognize that you’re feeling uncomfortable.
Step 2: Feel the discomfort.
Step 3: Identify the thought that is causing the uncomfortable emotion.
Step 4: Question the thought that you identified.
Step 5: Decide on purpose what you want to think and believe.

You can survive discomfort. You can survive uncomfortable emotions. You can decide intentionally what you want to believe based on what helps you move forward toward the results you want in your life … even if it makes you feel uncomfortable.

That’s how you get really good at feeling uncomfortable. You practice feeling uncomfortable. And you do it anyway.
