Was 2020 your gap year?

Did you plan to have a gap year?

A gap year, also known as a sabbatical year, is typically a year-long break before or after college or university during
which students engage in various educational and developmental activities, such as travel or some type of regular work.

It’s a year of “figuring things out”.

Did you plan in a gap year for the first year or two of your business?

Did you plan a time for yourself where you would give yourself permission to experiment, test the waters and learn how you want your business to look?

Maybe you don’t need a gap year. Not everyone does.

I didn’t start college until I was 23. Apparently, I needed five gap years. J I didn’t judge myself for that. I was proud of myself for knowing what I needed during that time in my life. It served me well. I actually saved time in the long run by waiting.

It gave me a chance to get to know who I was, what I was good at, what I enjoyed doing. I didn’t have a string of false starts. I went all in on my major and stayed laser focused for all five years from start to finish, earning my bachelors, masters, then getting my CPA certification.

So what if you need a gap year? What are you making that mean about you? Why is that a problem?

What if it gives you a chance to get to know who you are, what you’re good at, what you enjoy doing and what you want your business to look like? What if it’s what you need in order to avoid a string of false starts? What if it’s what you need in order to go all in on and stay laser focused?

Some of my clients are very clear about who they want to serve and the problem they want to solve and some aren’t as clear on that.

Some of my clients are very clear about what they want their business to look like and some aren’t as clear about that.

Whether they are or aren’t clear on the different pieces of the puzzle they’re trying to put together, money mindset is a piece that they ultimately need to become intentional about along the way.

Either way, both types of clients have something in common. Money beliefs are limiting them in their business, sometimes in completely different ways.

And the key for both is identifying those limits they’re placing on themselves and questioning those limits. When they transform their identity to become the person who is no longer limiting themselves through what they believe about themselves and about money, they increase the possibilities for themselves and for their business.

They develop a new identity that fully serves them to take into their future.

They set goals based not on who they have been, but on who they are becoming.

Why would you set goals for someone you no longer are interested in being?

It makes total sense to set goals based on who you want to be, not who you once saw yourself as. Just because you once showed up as that person because of what you were believing doesn’t mean you should keep doing what that person once did.

You want to start showing up as the person that buys into beliefs that don’t limit you or your business. That includes setting goals as that person.

As you’re stepping into 2021, consider what goals the 2021 version of you sets.

Visualize what this person is now capable of and imagine what else she’ s capable of. Elevate your thinking to correspond with the person you’ll be by the end of 2021 and start showing up as her at the BEGINNING of 2021. Start setting big goals for that version of yourself and start right now being the person that achieves them.

When you do this, all kinds of discomfort will come up. It’s not a problem. Allow it to come up and notice what obstacles your brain reveals to you. This is the gift your brain is giving you in order to allow you to begin developing strategies to overcome these obstacles.

It just gives you a head start on whatever you’ll ultimately need to find a way around, over, under or through. You’ll be fully prepared to handle anything that comes up.
