I hate going shopping for something and not find it. I’m looking for something that I want, I might not know exactly what I’m looking for. You know how it goes, “I’ll know it when I see it” sort of thing.
What I hate even more than that is to have a salesperson try to tell me what I want. Maybe the look on my face says, “Yeah, whatever you’re selling ain’t what I’m looking for.” Then they try to talk me into wanting whatever it is they’re selling. As if they know better than I do what I want.
I don’t know about you but this rarely works for me.
Are you doing this? Are you trying to talk your potential clients into wanting what you have? Are you trying to convince them that what you have is exactly what they want? Are you trying to sell them what you think they should have?
If this is you, stop it!
Your clients might not know what they need, but they know what they want. You probably know what most of your potential clients need. But that’s not what you’re selling them.
Yes, I know you’re going to totally overdeliver and give them exactly what they need.
But what you’re selling them is what they want.
This is not deceptive. Because you will actually give them both what they want and what they need. They don’t even know yet what lies beneath what they want, but they will be thrilled when they get that.
Your job is to help them get that. You don’t have to be manipulative. You don’t have to be salesy or sleazy or slimy. You don’t have to do it in a way that you can’t wait to take a shower afterwards.
You just have to connect with what they want.
Connect the dots between what you have and what they want.
Address what they want, not what you know they need.
Getting what they need is just a happy bonus — they don’t need to know this right now.
What they need to know is that you have what they want.
But only if that’s true.
What do your clients want? How does what you’re offering give them that?
I would love to talk through this with you. Book a free strategy session with me here and we’ll brainstorm together to help your clients get what they want.
