It’s so interesting to watch what our brains do. It’s completely fascinating. We all have our story – the story about who we are.
And story is such an appropriate word.
Sometimes it’s a fairy tale sometimes a horror flick and sometimes a documentary. My point is that not everything we’re believing about our story is absolute, incontrovertible TRUTH.
But we sure act like it is. And we resist anyone disturbing it.
And that’s okay.
You get to pick the story you believe.
Because you are the boss of you.
You are in complete control.
What completely fascinates me is the resistance I notice in my clients to choosing a story that’s MORE abundant, MORE fun, MORE successful, just MORE. Even though they say they want MORE, they resist the MORE that God has for them.
They resist believing a story that IS About abundance and FREEDOM.
Why the resistance? And it’s not just my clients’ brains that do this. I do it too.
So what’s going on?
Why do they choose the story where they have so many limits?
- Where they have debt?
- Where they don’t have the business they want?
- Where they don’t make the difference they’ve always wanted to make?
- Where they don’t enjoy the money they were meant to have?
- Why is that so much easier to choose?
Here’s what I think:
- It’s safe. It requires no extra pain, no extra effort.
- It doesn’t match their identity. When they look in the mirror, it’s not who they see. It feels like they’re pretending or lying to themselves.
- It means they’ll have to do A LOT more WORK to get that. They don’t want the extra responsibility and if they do, they don’t feel capable of it.
So they push it away. They resist it.
As a coach, it’s my job to notice that resistance and to help them challenge it. Then help them change it.
Yes, it can be uncomfortable for you to acknowledge that resistance.
But acknowledging your resistance, not judging yourself for feeling it and showing yourself some grace? All keys to overcoming it.
When you overcome this resistance, you give yourself permission to step into that identity. Living that reality before you see that reality is critical to making your new identity, your new reality.
You don’t have to be ready.
You don’t have to fully believe it now.
You don’t have to fully believe it 100% of the time.
You just have to be committed to it. Practice being committed to the reality you WANT.
Dale Carnegie, in How To Win Friends & Influence People, shared the quote,
‘By fighting you never get enough, but by yielding you get more than you expected.’
What’s the story you want to make a reality? What would happen if you stopped fighting, stopped resisting it?
What’s your next step to making that story a reality? Put it on your calendar right now.
