How do you MASTER Your Business?
How do you MASTER Your Life?
You MASTER Your Money Lies.
If this is your first episode, I encourage you to go back and listen to the first few episodes of this podcast to learn more about Money Lies. But to put it simply Money Lies are limiting beliefs. They limit you from getting, enjoying, having the MORE you’re MADE for.
If you’ve ever had a virus on your computer, do you know when it got on your computer, how it got there, how long it’s been there? Not usually. So how do you learn it’s there? Because you start noticing that your computer doesn’t seem to be working quite right. Its performance is off. It’s slow and unresponsive.
When you start investigating those performance issues is usually when you detecting and expose the virus. You realize there’s a virus that’s been operating in the background, slowly taking over your computer and limiting its performance. This is just like Money Lies. A Money Lie will slow you down in your business. It will have you procrastinating or not performing as you should. It will have you eating up time and space in your brain with junk instead of productivity. It limits your performance and it’s not until you start investigating the performance issues that you realize you have a Money Lie operating in the background.
In our business, when there are performance issues, we often misdiagnose the problem-the reason our business is underperforming. We think it’s a marketing problem, a niche problem, a copy problem. We hire a business coach or a social media coach or a sales coach. But what I find with my clients is that the root cause is their Money Mindset. Money Mindset is usually the last place we look for the problem even though it’s one of the most common problems for entrepreneurs.
That’s why I decided to spend some time on the podcast sharing my MASTER Your Money Mindset 6-step process. Each month I’m sharing examples and strategies to MASTER Your Money Mindset.
In April I started with the M in MASTER Which is for Money lies-you first have to detect and expose the Money Lies you believe in order to MASTER Your Money Mindset. Episode 49-53 were about Money Lies, how to detect and expose Money Lies, examples of different Money lies, how they’re so often something we’re not even aware is operating in the background, like a computer virus.
In May I talked about the A in MASTER which stands for Awareness,
In episodes 54 through 57 I shared why we all have a scarcity mindset and how to explore different aspects of your own limited money mindset. Each of the steps in the MASTER process is important. So be sure to spend some time building awareness around your own lies. We all develop similar thought patterns when we have a limited money mindset, but those patterns develop differently for each one of us based on our unique experience from birth to where you currently are. And that will determine how you apply the next step in the process which is to question your money lies and uncover the truth.
In June, I’ll be talking about the S in Master, which is for is for Scrutinize.
In July, I’ll talk about the T in MASTER , then E then R, until we’ve covered all 6 steps to MASTER Your Money Mindset. Be sure to keep tuning in to get everything you need to MASTER Your Money Mindset so you can MASTER making the impact and the money you’re meant for in your business.
It’s all part of my mission to equip and empower one million women to build $1 million dollars in net worth. It’s about stepping into your power to create what you want to see in the world using the unique gifts you’ve been given.
Let’s dive in to the process of Scrutinizing our money lies.
What’s wrong with the world? Nothing- Absolutely nothing has gone wrong when the world doesn’t act like we want them to. Whether it’s circumstances, thoughts, feelings, actions, inaction, or results, we can choose to judge those and suffer from it or we can choose to focus on what we want and what we CAN do to get it. I don’t know if you’ve heard this story, but I’m going to share it in case you haven’t.
It’s called the Story of the stallion and it goes like this. A farmer and his son had a beloved horse who helped the family earn a living. One day, the horse ran away and their neighbors exclaimed, “Your horse ran away, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Who can know what is good or bad?”
A few days later, the horse returned home, leading a few wild horses back to the farm as well. The neighbours shouted out, “Your horse has returned, and brought several horses home with him. What great luck!” The farmer replied, “Who can know what is good or bad?”
Later that week, the farmer’s son was trying to break one of the horses and she threw him to the ground, breaking his leg. The neighbours cried, “Your son broke his leg, what terrible luck!” The farmer replied, “Who can know what is good or bad?”
A few weeks later, soldiers from the national army marched through town, recruiting all boys for the army. They did not take the farmer’s son, because he had a broken leg. The neighbours shouted, “Your boy is spared, what tremendous luck!” To which the farmer replied, “Who can know what is good or bad?”
Instead of judging what is right or wrong, how can we connect more intentionally with what we want and what would lead to getting it? Obviously, there are things in this story that the farmer did not control and by believing that nothing in and of itself is good or bad, he could be open to focus on the only thing he does control which is himself.
Some of my clients, and me if I’m being honest, focus so much on the things that they don’t control, they’re too tired and exhausted to do the things they do control. One of the ways I’ve been bringing myself back to center, to neutral, and out of judgment is to ask myself a couple of simple questions. I don’t always ask all of these. Most often, I just ask one question and that gets me out of the drama which stops the spinning so I can think more clearly.
I thought these would be the perfect questions to kick off a month of questioning our money lies. Here are a few questions that I alternate to help me get back to center, back to neutral, out of spinning or judgment.
What do I want in this moment? What do I want in this situation? If the answer is something that doesn’t stop the spinning, then I explore further. Sometimes we want something that we don’t have a lot of control over. If it’s raining outside and I want it to NOT be raining outside, then there’s not a lot I can do about that in the moment. But I can figure out why I want it to NOT be raining outside. Maybe it’s because I wanted to plant my flowers today. Why today? Because it was when I had planned to do it and I don’t want to be inconvenienced by the rain. How might that not be an inconvenience?
How can this new way actually work out better? Maybe I swap this with my grocery shopping day or my laundry day and maybe that means that my husband can then help me with the planting because it’s a day that he’s actually available. Maybe I do some errands today instead of the day I had planned and in the process, I avoid a 20-car pile up on the highway I would have been on had I not rearranged my plans because of the rain.
That’s judging situations that are circumstances. We also do a lot of judging of people that are circumstances. Have you ever had the thought that sounds something like this? “Why are they doing that? That is the wrong way to do that. I don’t get why they would do that.” Or, “why can’t my husband just make more money? That would make it so much easier for me to build my business, because I wouldn’t have the pressure of making the money in my business to make sure our family is provided for.” My clients have similar thought patterns.
It’s fine to think that someone else should be able to do something or should be different, but just know that as long as you’re focused on what someone else should be and waiting for that to happen, you’re not focused on finding a solution that you can implement. You’re giving away control of the solution. This is why you get stuck.
Why do I want that? What will that give me? What else could give me that?
We’re all just doing the best we can in any given moment based on what we’re believing at the time. There are things we’re in control of and things we’re not in control of. When we focus on what we’re not in control of, we don’t take control of the things we can actually do something about. Which leads us to be less in control.
Accept what is as part of the process, then look for ways you can actually make a difference.
Ask:
What CAN I do?
What do I control?
What do I WANT?
What are my options?
What’s the problem I want to solve?
What do I want right now? Why?
What do I ultimately want?
What can I do right now?
To give you one more example, I recently detected and exposed the money lie “I shouldn’t shine too brightly.” When I built awareness around that lie, I realized that this came from how I interpreted my stepmother’s behavior. I felt diminished, reduced whenever I excelled in school. I felt judged for being “too good” at things. I learned to tone it down, to be less visible. Intertwined with that was the thought, “I’m doing it wrong.” Because I got what felt like negative attention when I shined too brightly. I got “knocked down a peg” if you will. But later I also started judging my stepmother for how she treated me. I thought she shouldn’t have said some of the things she said. She shouldn’t have done some of the things she did. I believed she did it wrong. But she wasn’t doing it “wrong” – she was just doing it. And she was doing the best she could.
Back to the story of the stallion, who can know what is good or bad?
And why does it matter? The past is a circumstance. This is why I go back to the questions that get me back in the moment I’m in. Because this moment is the only one I can do something about.
What are my options in this moment?
What do I want in this moment?
If this is what I have to work with, what do I want my result to be?
How can I best create that result for myself?
When you’re waiting on something outside of you to create your result, you’re only subjecting yourself to frustration and potentially missing out on everything you’re meant for. It’s your choice, wait for the world to do it “right” and stop doing it “wrong” or identify the problem and what you can do about it, not from a victim mentality, but from a powerful victor mentality.
You’ll find a whole lot more that you’re capable of when you stop judging, stop spinning, and stop waiting for your MORE and start creatively building the MORE you’re MADE for.
