So much of our suffering in life comes from judging ourselves or others. Start paying attention to everything you do. Notice where you find judgment.
Judgment looks like this:
“Wow! I just wish … ” or
“Things shouldn’t really be this way …. ” or
“They should do ….. better/different/less/more”
Judgment is arguing with the way things are. The only things we should change are the things that only we have control of … starting with our own mind.
What if we didn’t judge everything we did in our business? How much more would we get done? How much faster would we grow?
I love this poem by Portia Nelson from her book “There’s a Hole in My Sidewalk”
It presents this progression of self-realization in such a simple way. It’s so matter-of-fact.
“I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost… I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes me a long time to get out.
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in. It’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault. I get out immediately.
walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
I walk down another street.”
Yes, in business we get stuck.
In business, we make mistakes.
In business, we fail … a lot.
But we figure it out.
It’s what we do.
If you’re not doing this, my guess is that you’re stuck.
Don’t stay stuck.
Do something.
Do anything.
Take action.
Evaluate the results.
Learn from it.
Take the next action.
Repeat.
